Philip Meachem is an up and coming filmmaker in his final year at university and is in the process of making his final year film. The film is called’Bullet wound’ (WT) and he hopes to enter it in festivals.

The film is a thriller about a hostage situation gone wrong with a strong female role.

Philip is a very ambitious, creatively determined director.
He would like to hear from people who would like to involved in this production.

We’re asking you to send in your idea for a new documentary film exploring the theme of “when are you grown up?”

Three emerging directors will be selected from a pitching session and will each receive a major commission for a one-off 60 minute documentary to be screened on BBC Three in July 2009.

Who can enter?

To apply you must be 18 years or over on 30th January 2009 and have not previously directed an hour-long documentary for network television.

BBC staff members, their close relations and entrants who have previously directed a 60 minute documentary for network television are ineligible.

Description:
Wythenshawe FM is one of Manchester’s longest running community radio stations and we are looking to develop a pool of sessional youth workers with experience of working with disadvantaged young people (youth work qualification is desirable) and radio experience.  However experience of music, drama and / or young person led youth work will also be considered due to the variety of projects we run.  You need to be willing to work evenings as well as daytime and in possession of a current enhanced CRB.   The hourly rate range is from £7 per hour up to £10 per hour dependant on qualifications and experience.

as Head of Diversity

Channel 4 has announced the appointment of Oona King as its Head of Diversity.

King, who is currently Senior Policy Advisor to the Prime Minister on Equalities and Diversity, has been given a brief to champion diversity across all Channel 4’s activities, both on and off-screen. She will work with external suppliers to ensure that similar standards and policies are applied across all production and business activities on behalf of Channel 4.

She will report directly to Chief Executive, Andy Duncan, when she takes up her new post in the spring. A key part of her role will be working with Duncan in his capacity as Chair of the Cultural Diversity Network to try and drive forward significant cross industry action on diversity.

Channel 4’s Diversity and Talent Manager, Ade Rawcliffe and Alison Walsh, its Editorial Manager, Disability will both report to King.

Channel 4 announced its intention to appoint a Head of Diversity when unveiling its Next on 4 strategic blueprint last year. It included initiatives designed to renew Channel 4’s commitment to reflecting social diversity on and off-screen, building on its unrivalled track record of portraying contemporary Britain in all its variety. 

Other initiatives already undertaken include the appointment of Aaqil Ahmed as Multicultural Commissioning Editor with a ring-fenced £2 million fund to commission more multicultural programmes for Channel 4’s peak schedule.  

Commenting on her appointment, Duncan said: “Oona has an impressive mix of experience. Her appointment signals our ambition to take the lead in helping broadcasting better reflect the diversity of modern Britain. I’m very hopeful that she can play a pivotal role in improving portrayal, attitudes and working practice not just at Channel 4 but right across the industry.”

Oona King added: “Channel 4 has been an amazing platform for diverse voices and perspectives from across British society for more than a quarter of a century. But there’s more work to be done to connect and reflect social minorities within  mainstream broadcasting, and I’m very much looking forward to this challenge.”

Oona King is a broadcaster and writer, former MP, and currently Senior Policy Advisor to the Prime Minister on Equalities and Diversity. She is Founding Chair of the All-Party Parliamentary Group on Genocide Prevention and Chair of a Youth Review. Oona writes for various newspapers and magazines including The Guardian, New Statesman, The Observer and The Mail on Sunday and is a TV presenter. She was the MP for Bethnal Green & Bow from 1997 to 2005, and her diaries were published by Bloomsbury in 2007.
